A Bit of Background
The IEE is Europe’s largest professional
engineering society and has a worldwide membership of over 140,000. Its
interests span all aspects of electrical, electronic, information and
manufacturing engineering. Its members range from students to leading figures
in industry, research, development and education. A professional staff of over
400 manages the Day to day running of the Institution led by the IEE’s
Secretary and Chief Executive. However, it is the Institution’s members who
are ultimately responsible for advising on and developing its strategy,
policies and future direction. The Institutions activities are ultimately
co-ordinated and ratified by the 140 members of the IEE Council. Did you know
that six of the elected places on the Council are for the IEE Associate
Members, most of who tend to be below the age of 30? No? Well, read on.
The IEE is well placed to provide the
support you require in developing new skills, taking on new responsibilities,
developing and deploying advanced technologies, and progressing in your career
in an increasingly dynamic employment marketplace.
Your career will most likely be via a
sequence of jobs in different organisations via a changing set of concurrent
roles meeting the needs of several companies. The IEE can become the one
lifetime source of support for the modern engineer. As an IEE member you will
already receive the IEE News and IEE recruitment once a month as well as a
technical magazine of your choice. You may have been an IEE courses and
seminars through your own initiative or through your companies.
|
| However, you may or may not know how you can
contribute to the IEE in your local area. |

Midlands Centre covers a large geographic area of the UK. The region has
a wide range of manufacturing and services industries which cover the
full spectrum of power, electronics, communications, control,
manufacturing, IT and transport technologies and applications which
utilise the skills of IEE members. Some prominent companies in our area

Why Should I join a Younger Members Committee?
See
http://www.iee.org.uk/Younger/
The IEE’s
Younger Members Officer has described Younger Members as "some of
the most energetic and enthusiastic people I have come across... The
wealth of fresh ideas they generate is guaranteed to ensure that the
post of Younger Members Officer remains an extremely busy one."
The North
West Midlands Younger Members Committee are a group of enthusiastic
young engineers pretty similar to yourself who all work in the area. The
Committee provides a focal point for you to get the most out of your
membership by providing unique opportunities to develop your career
potential by means of deciding what events can be provided to further
our members skills and interests. Our monthly meetings are usually well
attended, and aim to be a social environment for the exchange of ideas.
|
| We
have a mission to hold a meeting in all of Stafford's pubs at some
time – just not in one evening!

What do we do? -
What don’t
we do?
The
committee works hard to provide a programme of interest to all our
members. Members from the IMechE and IIE are also welcome to partake,
and some events are open to all.
It is important to note that the wide
variety of events only arises due to the wide range of interests and
ideas in our area.
Recent notable events arranged in our
area by both the IEE and IMechE include: -
The FreeLander Vehicle
- a look at the development of the Land Rover FreeLander.
Sensaura
- Hearing in Three Dimensions.
Digital Interactive TV
- Set Top Box, or not?
Visit to the Triumph Motorcycle Company
- An opportunity
to see the latest British motorcycle designs and technology.
Air Accident Investigation
- A discussion of the investigative techniques applied by the Department
of Transport in order to understand the cause of aircraft accidents and
how the information found contributes to future directives for
minimising risks.
Homo Sapiens to Robo Sapiens
- The future of
artificial life, robots and humans!
Electrical Equipment Design
- black art to state-of-the-art.
|
|
Don’t like the sound of any of these?
Come along to our committee meetings and give
us your suggestions. |

SATRO
- Staffordshire Science And
Technology Regional
Organisation is part of a
national network of support and development units encouraging students and
teachers to provide a greater emphasis on Engineering, Science,
Manufacturing and Technology in schools. The younger members have links
with SATRO and are currently planning demonstrations in local schools in
support of the IEE nationwide Micromouse competition.
Micromouse is a machine that will find its
way successfully around a pre-determined maze. If you would like to build
a Micromouse or get involved with promoting this intellectual sport, we
have some kits available to members.
|
| We exhibited the Micromouse at a
Technology event at The Britannia Stadium,
Stoke, as a part of this programme. |
